Peelframe
Peelframe

Four ways to remove burned-in subtitles, compared
Updated 2026-10-14 · Peelframe
Before removing subtitles from a video, find out whether they are separate from the picture or drawn into it. If they are drawn in, there are four broad ways to get rid of them, and they differ a lot in how natural the result looks and how long it takes.
Hard subtitles vs. soft subtitles
Soft subtitles are text kept apart from the picture: an SRT or SMI file, or a subtitle track inside an MKV or MP4. The player draws the text on top while playing, so turning it off or dropping the track removes it with no loss in quality.
Hard (burned-in) subtitles were merged into the picture when the video was made. The original image under the letters is not stored anywhere in the file, so removing them means painting something new into that spot. The four methods below differ in how they paint it. Not sure which kind you have? Start with how to tell soft subtitles from hard ones.
1. Crop the subtitles out
If the subtitles only ever sit at the very bottom, you can crop off the bottom of the frame. Any editor can do it and it leaves no trace.
The price is part of your picture and a different aspect ratio. Cropping a 16:9 video and scaling it back to 16:9 means zooming in, which costs sharpness. It also cannot handle subtitles in the middle of the frame or ones that move around.
2. Blur or cover them
A blur, a mosaic or a solid bar over the text is quick and available everywhere.
The cover itself stays visible, though: a smudge or a band at the bottom of the frame. It only makes sense if you plan to put new subtitles on top of it.
3. Fill from the surroundings
This pulls the colours and texture from just outside the subtitle area into it. Peelframe's Quick fill method works this way. Over sky, walls or flat backgrounds it looks fine and it is light to compute.
Over faces, patterned clothes or foliage you will see smearing, and the bigger the subtitle, the further the fill has to reach and the more obvious it gets.
4. Restore the background with AI
AI inpainting looks at the surrounding image and the scene and draws what was most likely behind the letters. Lines of buildings, water and grass continue naturally, far better than a plain fill.
It needs a lot of computation, so a computer with a graphics processor (GPU) finishes much faster. And because the AI is estimating, important areas that were heavily covered, such as a face, may come out different from the original or leave a trace.
At a glance
| Method | How natural | Speed | Best for |
| Crop | No trace (picture lost) | Very fast | A single line at the very bottom, when the frame can change |
| Blur / bar | Cover is visible | Very fast | When new subtitles will go on top |
| Fill from surroundings | Good on plain backgrounds | Fast | Small text over sky, walls, flat colour |
| AI restoration | Most natural | Needs a GPU, slower | Text over people, scenery, moving backgrounds |
Doing it in Peelframe
- Pick a video in the workspace. MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV files up to 120 MB, 3 minutes and 1920 px on the long side are supported.
- Choose a removal method: AI auto removal + restoration finds the subtitles for you; AI restoration · manual area lets you mark the area yourself.
- Run Preview AI restoration (≤ 0.2 s) on the hardest scene first. It also estimates the full run time from the speed measured on your device.
- Press Remove subtitles & verify. When processing ends, the result file is checked automatically before you download it.
The result is an MP4 (H.264 + AAC) with the same resolution and length as the original; frames without subtitles skip the AI step. For cleaner results, see tips for removing subtitles without a trace.
In short
For a single line at the very bottom where a slightly smaller frame is fine, cropping is quickest. On plain backgrounds a fill works; over people or scenery, AI restoration gives the most natural result. Whatever the method, only process videos you have the rights to (see the copyright checklist).
